What makes Granat different?

Granat is Festool&s versatile professional abrasive developed for demanding sanding applications. Modern coatings, clear coats and fillers can generate extremely fine sanding residue which can quickly reduce the effectiveness of conventional abrasives. Granat is designed to maintain dependable cutting performance while delivering a consistent sanding pattern across these difficult surfaces.

What does P320 mean?

P320 identifies a fine abrasive grit intended for controlled surface refinement rather than substantial stock removal. The smaller abrasive particles produce a much finer scratch pattern than coarse and intermediate grits, making P320 ideal when a surface is approaching its final preparation stage.

When should P320 be used?

P320 is most effective once major levelling and intermediate sanding are complete. It is particularly useful after P240 where further refinement is required before applying a coating, continuing to P400 or moving into another finishing process specified for the material.

P240 to P320 to P400

A controlled fine-sanding sequence can make a noticeable difference to final surface quality. P240 performs the earlier fine-refinement work, P320 further reduces the sanding pattern and P400 can provide an even finer preparation stage where required. The correct final grit should always be selected according to the coating, finish and substrate being processed.

Why avoid large grit jumps?

A very fine abrasive is inefficient at removing deep scratches left by much coarser sanding. Moving progressively through appropriate grit grades allows each abrasive to remove the sanding marks created by the previous stage. This improves efficiency, preserves abrasive life and helps produce a more consistent surface.

Festool StickFix

StickFix is Festool&s hook-and-loop abrasive attachment system. The sanding sheet presses directly onto the compatible sanding pad and remains securely positioned during operation. When the sheet becomes worn or another grit is required, it can be peeled away and replaced quickly without clamps or separate adhesive.

Designed for modern professional finishing

Granat is particularly valuable for painters and varnishers working with modern coating systems and VOC clear coats. Its versatility also makes it useful for professionals processing plastics, acrylic, mineral materials, fillers and repair compounds, providing one abrasive family for a broad range of surface-preparation tasks.

Pro Tips

  • Use P320 after P240 where a finer and more uniform sanding pattern is required before coating or finishing.
  • If deeper sanding marks are still visible, return to the appropriate coarser abrasive rather than trying to remove them completely with P320.
  • For extremely fine preparation, progress from P320 to P400 where this is appropriate for the coating or finishing system.
  • When sanding paint or clear coat, follow the coating manufacturer&s recommended final sanding grit before recoating or polishing.
  • Use light to moderate sanding pressure and allow the abrasive and machine action to do the work.
  • Align the sheet accurately on the sanding pad so the complete 93 x 178 mm abrasive surface is properly supported.
  • Use effective dust extraction wherever possible to keep loose particles away from the finely prepared surface.
  • Clean the workpiece thoroughly before progressing to P400, coating, varnishing or polishing so stray abrasive particles cannot scratch the refined surface.

How to Use

  • Switch off the sander and disconnect it from its electrical or compressed-air supply before fitting the abrasive.
  • Inspect the sanding pad and ensure the StickFix surface is clean and in good condition.
  • Confirm that coarse and intermediate sanding stages have already produced a sufficiently even surface for P320 refinement.
  • Select one STF 93x178 P320 Granat abrasive sheet from the pack.
  • Align the abrasive accurately with the 93 x 178 mm sanding pad and press it firmly onto the StickFix surface.
  • Connect suitable dust extraction where applicable.
  • Place the sander flat against the workpiece and begin sanding with smooth, controlled movements.
  • Use light to moderate pressure and guide the machine evenly across the surface using overlapping passes.
  • Inspect the surface regularly to confirm that sanding marks from the previous stage are being refined consistently.
  • Once the P320 stage is complete, thoroughly remove sanding residue before applying a coating, progressing to P400 or continuing with another finishing process.

Safety

  • Wear appropriate eye, hearing and respiratory protection according to the material and coating being sanded.
  • Use suitable dust extraction whenever possible, particularly when sanding coatings, fillers, plastics, mineral materials or other dust-producing surfaces.
  • Before sanding existing paints or coatings, establish whether they may contain hazardous substances and follow the appropriate occupational safety requirements.
  • Do not sand asbestos-containing or similarly hazardous materials unless the work is carried out by appropriately trained personnel using the required equipment and procedures.
  • Ensure the abrasive sheet is correctly aligned and securely attached to the sanding pad before operating the machine.
  • Replace torn, damaged or excessively worn abrasive sheets before continuing work.
  • Keep hands and loose clothing clear of the sanding surface while the machine is operating.
  • Follow all operating and safety instructions supplied with the Festool sander, dust extractor and the material or coating system being processed.
