What makes Granat different?

Modern varnishes, paints and fillers can produce fine sanding residue that rapidly fills the spaces between conventional abrasive grains. Once an abrasive becomes clogged, cutting performance falls and unnecessary heat may develop. Granat features a special coating designed to help prevent this premature loading, allowing the abrasive surface to remain active for longer and supporting a long useful service life.

What does P120 mean?

P120 identifies the abrasive grit size and represents a versatile preparation and intermediate sanding grade. It provides finer cutting action than P100, P60 or P40 while still removing material efficiently enough for general surface preparation. This makes P120 particularly useful for refining earlier sanding stages and preparing surfaces before moving to finer finishing abrasives.

When should P120 be used?

P120 is a practical choice once major surface irregularities and heavy material removal have already been addressed. It can be used to refine sanding marks from coarser abrasives, level fillers and coatings and create an even surface before progressing to P150, P180 or another suitable finer grit according to the material and desired finish.

Why use a progressive sanding sequence?

Every abrasive grit produces a characteristic scratch pattern. Progressing through suitably selected grit stages allows each finer abrasive to remove the scratches left by the previous grit. This creates a controlled transition from coarse preparation through to a smooth finished surface and avoids the inefficiency of asking an excessively fine abrasive to remove deep scratches.

Festool StickFix

StickFix is Festool&s hook-and-loop abrasive attachment system. The abrasive sheet presses directly onto the compatible sanding pad and remains securely positioned during operation. Once worn, or when a different grit is required, the sheet can be peeled away and replaced quickly without clamps or separate adhesive.

Designed for demanding professional applications

Granat is particularly useful for painters, varnishers, drywall professionals and joiners because it can handle many different materials encountered during surface preparation. From modern paint systems and hard base layers to fillers, plastics and mineral materials, Granat offers a highly versatile abrasive solution for professional workflows.

Pro Tips

  • Use P120 once heavy material removal is complete and you are ready to refine the surface for subsequent finishing stages.
  • If deep sanding scratches from P40 or P60 remain visible, use an intermediate grit such as P80 or P100 before progressing to P120.
  • For a finer finish, continue from P120 to P150, P180 or another suitable finer abrasive according to the coating or material being prepared.
  • Position the abrasive accurately on the sanding pad so the full 93 x 178 mm sheet is properly supported during operation.
  • Use effective dust extraction wherever possible to maintain good visibility and help keep the abrasive surface cleaner.
  • Avoid excessive sanding pressure. Allow the abrasive grain and machine movement to perform the cutting.
  • Replace the sheet once cutting efficiency noticeably decreases rather than applying additional pressure to compensate for a worn abrasive.
  • Remove loose sanding dust before changing to the next finer grit so coarse particles do not contaminate the finer sanding stage.

How to Use

  • Switch off the sander and disconnect it from its electrical or compressed-air supply before installing the abrasive.
  • Inspect the sanding pad and make sure its StickFix surface is clean and in good condition.
  • Select one STF 93x178 P120 Granat abrasive sheet from the pack.
  • Align the 93 x 178 mm sheet correctly with the sanding pad and press it firmly onto the StickFix surface.
  • Connect suitable dust extraction where applicable.
  • Place the sander flat against the workpiece and begin sanding using smooth, controlled passes.
  • Guide the machine evenly across the surface with overlapping movements to create consistent preparation.
  • Apply moderate pressure and allow the abrasive to perform the cutting rather than forcing the machine against the surface.
  • Inspect the surface regularly to confirm that scratches and imperfections from the previous sanding stage have been removed evenly.
  • After completing the P120 stage, remove sanding dust before progressing to the appropriate finer Granat abrasive if additional refinement is required.

Safety

  • Wear appropriate eye, hearing and respiratory protection according to the material and coating being sanded.
  • Use suitable dust extraction whenever possible, particularly when sanding coatings, fillers, plastics, mineral materials or other dust-producing surfaces.
  • Before sanding existing paints or coatings, determine whether they may contain hazardous substances and follow the appropriate occupational safety requirements.
  • Do not sand asbestos-containing or similarly hazardous materials unless the work is carried out by appropriately trained personnel using the required equipment and procedures.
  • Ensure the abrasive sheet is correctly aligned and securely attached to the sanding pad before starting the machine.
  • Replace torn, damaged or excessively worn abrasive sheets before continuing work.
  • Keep hands and loose clothing clear of the sanding surface while the machine is operating.
  • Follow all operating and safety instructions supplied with the Festool sander, dust extractor and material or coating system being processed.
