What does P60 mean?

P60 identifies a coarse abrasive grit designed for substantial material removal. It is less aggressive than P40 but still provides strong cutting action, making it a useful choice for initial surface preparation, levelling and preparing rough surfaces before moving to intermediate abrasive grades.

P40 or P60?

P40 is generally preferred where maximum material removal is required or the surface is particularly rough. P60 provides a more controlled next step, continuing to remove material efficiently while producing a finer scratch pattern. The best starting grit depends on the surface condition, material and amount of stock that must be removed.

Why progress through different grit sizes?

Every abrasive grit leaves its own characteristic scratch pattern. Moving progressively through suitable grit grades allows each finer abrasive to remove the scratches produced by the previous stage. After P60, intermediate grades such as P80, P100 or P120 can be selected according to the material and required finish.

Pro Tips

After P60, continue through appropriate intermediate grits such as P80, P100 or P120 rather than making excessively large jumps in grit size.
Align the abrasive accurately on the sanding pad so the complete sheet is properly supported during sanding.
Use effective dust extraction wherever possible to improve visibility, working conditions and abrasive performance.
Allow the abrasive grain to perform the cutting. Excessive pressure can increase heat and lead to unnecessary abrasive wear.

How to Use

Switch off the sander and disconnect it from its electrical or compressed-air supply before fitting the abrasive.
