Maykestag HSS-Co5 Machine Tap MF 6 x 0.5 DIN 374 Form B

Professional HSS-Co5 machine tap for producing MF 6 x 0.5 metric fine internal threads in through holes, manufactured to DIN 374 with an ISO2 (6H) thread tolerance and Form B 3.5–5P chamfer for controlled, accurate thread cutting.

The Maykestag Code 5154 machine tap is designed for accurate production of metric fine threads in professional machining applications. This MF 6 tap has a fine 0.5mm pitch and is manufactured from HSS-Co5 cobalt-alloyed high-speed steel, providing the toughness, heat resistance and cutting-edge durability required for dependable thread production. Its Form B chamfer provides a progressive cutting lead over approximately 3.5 to 5 thread pitches, making the geometry particularly suitable for through-hole tapping.

What does MF 6 x 0.5 mean? MF identifies an ISO metric fine thread. The MF 6 designation refers to a nominal thread diameter of 6mm, while the 0.5mm pitch is the distance from one thread crest to the next. Metric fine threads use a finer pitch than the corresponding standard coarse metric thread where applicable.

Product highlights

  • MF 6 x 0.5 thread: Produces a 6mm nominal metric fine internal thread with a precise 0.5mm pitch.
  • HSS-Co5 construction: Cobalt-alloyed high-speed steel offers excellent toughness, heat resistance and cutting-edge durability for professional tapping.
  • DIN 374 standard: Manufactured to the recognised dimensional standard for this type of metric fine machine tap.
  • ISO2 (6H) tolerance: Designed to produce the commonly specified 6H internal metric thread tolerance class.
  • Form B chamfer: A 3.5–5P cutting lead provides gradual tooth engagement and controlled chip formation during through-hole tapping.
  • Through-hole application: The Form B geometry is designed for applications where chips can continue ahead of the tap and exit the hole.
  • 5.5mm tap-drill diameter: Maykestag specifies a 5.5mm pre-drilled hole for this MF 6 x 0.5 tap.
  • Precision dimensions: 80mm overall length with a 14mm cutting section, 4.5mm shank and 3.4mm square drive.

Why Choose Maykestag?

Maykestag is an Austrian cutting-tool brand focused on precision-manufactured tools for professional machining. Thread cutting demands particularly accurate geometry because pitch, thread profile, tolerance and cutting-edge condition all directly influence the quality of the finished internal thread. Maykestag provides clearly defined standards, tolerances and application data to help machinists select the correct tap for the job.

The Code 5154 range combines HSS-Co5 cutting material with DIN 374 geometry, ISO2 (6H) thread tolerance and a Form B chamfer. This combination makes the range well suited to controlled production of metric fine threads across the material groups rated by Maykestag.

Designed for Accurate Fine-Thread Tapping

With a nominal MF 6 thread diameter and 0.5mm pitch, this tap is intended specifically for fine-pitch internal threads rather than a standard coarse M6 thread. The Form B 3.5–5P chamfer gradually brings the cutting teeth into contact with the workpiece, distributing the cutting load over several teeth and helping the tap enter the prepared hole smoothly. Using Maykestag&s specified 5.5mm tap-drill diameter, together with the correct cutting speed, lubrication and machine alignment, helps achieve accurate thread form, dependable tool life and a consistent finished thread.

What is a Form B chamfer?

A Form B tap uses a relatively long cutting chamfer of approximately 3.5 to 5 thread pitches. Instead of the full thread profile engaging the workpiece immediately, the chamfer progressively introduces the cutting teeth into the material. This distributes the cutting load across several teeth and is particularly suited to through-hole tapping, where chips have space to move ahead of the cutting action and exit the hole.

Understanding ISO2 (6H) thread tolerance

ISO2 (6H) identifies the thread tolerance produced by the tap. The 6H class is a widely used tolerance for ISO metric internal threads and provides the controlled clearance required for normal assembly with a correctly matched external metric thread. Using the correct tap-drill diameter and maintaining accurate machine alignment are important for achieving the intended thread tolerance.

MaySpeedGuide: Maykestag recommends using the MaySpeedGuide to determine the appropriate cutting conditions for the tool, workpiece material and machining application.

Tap preparation matters. For this MF 6 x 0.5 tap, Maykestag specifies a 5.5mm tap-drill diameter. Correct hole size, suitable cutting fluid, accurate alignment and the appropriate cutting speed all help improve thread quality and tool life.
